Ground-breaking ceremony starts Bluff Country Co-op’s expansion

Bluff Country Co-op held a ground-breaking ceremony as a commencement of the co-op’s expansion project. The ceremony included brief speeches by BCC Board President Ann Lichliter, BCC General Manager Dawn Schreiber, and Winona Mayor Mark Peterson. Each spoke about the importance of the co-op and its impact on the community.

“Seventeen years ago, we moved into our current location and nearly tripled our size. Almost immediately, folks began dreaming of taking up the entire building,” Schreiber recalled. “Now, 17 years later, we are fulfilling those dreams.”

Schreiber also spoke about how this project will allow the co-op to work toward its vision of providing local, organic, good food to the community.

Lichliter spoke about the improvements that will come with the expansion, listing an increase in the access of healthy food to people in the area and a new classroom space that will allow BCC to educate the community about healthy food.

Mayor Peterson also spoke about the benefits of the expansion. “Winona is on the cusp of a renaissance,” he said, indicating that BCC’s expansion fits with the city’s plans for downtown revitalization.

After the ceremony, the co-op offered tours of the side of the building under construction to those who were interested. The co-op will offer additional tours for co-op owners throughout construction.
