Winona works to become dementia-friendly

A dementia-friendly community thrives with the involvement and education of all community members and businesses

The Winona Act on Alzheimer’s Action Team is hosting Winona’s first ever Dementia Friendly Community Week from April 2-6, 2018. The events will aim to educate and inform the Winona community on dementia and assist people living with dementia to explore the resources available to them in Winona.

On Monday, April 2, at 12:30 p.m. at the Winona Friendship Center, there will be a showing of the movie “Still Alice,” in which a linguistics professor and her family find their bonds tested when she is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. A group discussion will follow the movie. Popcorn and refreshment will be served. The event is free; registration is appreciated by calling the Friendship Center at 507-454-5212.

On Tuesday, April 3, at 4 p.m. at the Winona Friendship Center, a community event will be held with Winona resident Virginia Laken, when she will address the topics of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and intimacy and aging – conditions which have affected and continue to impact her life. She will share her personal journal entries and essays on how she experiences and copes with these life-altering challenges. The event is free; registration is appreciated by calling the Friendship Center at 507-454-5212.

After Laken’s talk, come see the resources and dementia services offered by local businesses and organizations until 6 p.m. Businesses include the Winona Friendship Center, the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Elder Network, the Winona Public Library, St. Anne of Winona, Sugar Loaf Senior Living, Sauer Health Care, Beno’s Deli, Age Well at Home – Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota, Winona Health, Winona County Community Services, the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts and Winona Volunteer Services.

From 4:45-6 p.m. the Memory Café Experience Open House will be held at the Winona Friendship Center. Come to experience a Memory Café for yourself. It’s an open house, so stay as long as you want. A Memory Café is a safe and welcoming space where individuals with memory loss and their care partners can socialize, engage in meaningful activities, exchange information, and support one another. Most importantly, Memory Cafés offer opportunities for individuals with a shared experience to connect. The event is free.

On Wednesday, April 4, check out SPARK!, the dementia-friendly event held monthly at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The event is free, but registration is required. Please call Heather Casper to register at 507-474-6626.

On Wednesday, April 4, from 12-12:30 p.m., the new Dementia Support Group will hold its first meeting at the Winona Friendship Center. Check out the new support group option in Winona and find other caregivers with whom to connect. Call Kori Iverson at Elder Network with questions at 507-452-0580. Subsequent Dementia Support Group meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of the month from 12-1 p.m. at Elder Network, 51 West Main Street, Winona.

On Wednesday, April 4, from 12:30-2 p.m. at the Winona Friendship Center, a dementia and hospice panel discussion will help attendees learn how hospice serves patients with various types of dementia as they and their families deal with end-of-life decisions. The panel will include Winona resident, Donna Kamann; Sheila Skeels from Winona Health Hospice; Kathi Mesick from Seasons Hospice; Christi Young from St. Croix Hospice; and Dr. Kelly Fehrenbacher from Gundersen Hospice. The event is free; registration is appreciated by calling the Friendship Center at 507-454-5212.

On Wednesday, April 4, from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m., partake in the dementia experience at Sugar Loaf Senior Living, which is perfect for anyone who has a loved one with dementia or anyone who is a caregiver and is designed to simulate what it is like to have dementia. The event is free and open to the public at Sugar Loaf Senior Living, 765 Menard Road. Reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling Maggie Modjeski at 507-452-1277 or emailing at Drop-in guests are welcome.

On Thursday, April 5, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Winona Friendship Center, speaker Douglas McGill, “The Leaf Artist,” will speak about his mother’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. McGill’s mother is bright and happy despite having minimal language skills and no memory. Does this look like how you would mentally picture Alzheimer’s disease? This is a different story about dementia. McGill is convinced it could be more common to experience dementia as his mother does. McGill’s talk describes how. The event is free; registration is appreciated by calling the Friendship Center at 507-454-5212.

On Friday, April 6, from 12-1 p.m. at the Winona Friendship Center, enjoy “Eat Lunch & Learn” from Dr. Joseph Gaugler, PhD, as he speaks about his research on the effects that dementia has on caregivers. Dr. Gaugler is a long-term care professor in the School of Nursing and Center on Aging at The University of Minnesota. An applied gerontologist, Dr. Gaugler’s interests include Alzheimer’s disease, long-term care and the longitudinal ramifications of family care for people with dementia and other chronic conditions. The event is free! To reserve a free lunch, call the Friendship Center at 507-454-5212. Sandwiches, finger food and refreshments will be provided at the event for registered participants.

There will be two opportunities to become a dementia friend by participating in a free dementia friends information session at the Winona Friendship Center, first on Tuesday, April 3, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., and on Thursday, April 5, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The event is free; register by calling the Friendship Center at 507-454-5212.
