High-speed pursuit zips through Winona County Tuesday

On Tuesday, May 22, Winona County Sheriff’s deputies assisted multiple law enforcement agencies during a high-speed chase that began in Monroe County, Wis., passed through Winona County and ended in Olmsted County. George Bojszuk, 49, of Burlington, Wis., was taken into custody in Olmsted County.

When the vehicle being pursued, a stolen 2006 Honda, entered into Minnesota, it was identified by a Minnesota state trooper, who attempted to stop the vehicle with the assistance of the Winona County Sheriff’s deputies. The driver fled westbound on I-90 and exited onto County Road 10 and continued northbound.

The pursuit was terminated in Olmsted County because of excessive speed and reckless and dangerous driving. However, soon after the chase ended, an adult male contacted the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department to report that an unidentified vehicle had pulled onto his property, located on County Road 10, via the driveway and proceeded into a field. When the Olmsted Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they reportedly identified the vehicle as the same one they had pursued earlier. When the deputies arrived the driver reportedly fled the vehicle into a nearby wooded area.

Winona County Sheriff’s deputies assisted Olmsted County agencies in establishing a perimeter around the area, and K-9 units and a helicopter were called in. The air and K-9 units located the suspect at the same time, and Bojszuk was taken into custody.

Bojszuk was arrested and is being charged with fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, fleeing law enforcement officials on foot, second-degree driving while intoxicated, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, having no Minnesota driver’s license, and criminal damage to property.

Assisting agencies include the Minnesota State Patrol Flight section, Winona County Sheriff’s Department, Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department, Rochester K-9 unit, and the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Department.
