St. Martin’s celebrates National Lutheran Schools Week, other events


Church service at St. Martin’s

Saturday, January 27, 5:30 p.m.

All kindergarten through eighth-grade students will sing. Please sit with your families, and come forward when called upon during the service. St. Martin’s staff will also be participating in the weekend worship services.

Monday, January 28, 10 a.m., St. Mary’s theater

All grades (kindergarten through eight) will attend the performance

Penny wars competition

Monday, January 28, to Friday, February 1

A friendly competition with all proceeds going to “Feed My Starving Children.”

The top two classes to collect the most pennies will receive a pizza/movie party, and a popcorn/movie party!

School Spirit Days

Monday, January 28, to Friday, February 1

The class with the greatest percentage of dressing for school spirit will receive a special treat from Bloedow’s. All clothing must be appropriate for school — no flip flops, sunglasses or short shorts.

Monday: Sports/hat day — Wear your favorite sports jersey, T-shirt, sweatshirt, hat or ANY sports attire from the Vikings, to the Brewers!

Tuesday: Mismatch/crazy sock and crazy hair day — dress crazy!

Wednesday: Decade day – dress in the clothing of your parents or grandparents and to bring back a little of the past to the present!

• Pre-school: 1990s — neon colors

• Kindergarten and grades one and two: 1960s, the age of rock ‘n roll — bell bottoms and “flower power”

• Grades three and four: 1970s — leisure suits and gauchos

• Grades five and six: 1980s — “big” hair and the age of disco music

• Grades seven and eight: 1950s — Bobbi socks, saddle shoes, greaser look

Thursday: Dress your best day – dress in your best clothes to show your love and appreciation for Christ’s love in each of our daily lives!

Friday: Pajama/slipper/favorite stuffed animal day — students and staff can forget about getting dressed up for the day. Just wear comfy PJs and slippers and bring your special stuffed animal.

Friendly AR competition (for students)

Monday, January 28, to Friday, March 8

Grades one through eight will compete in a friendly AR challenge against other Lutheran schools in the country to help challenge avid readers and see how St. Martin’s matches up against other students. St. Martin’s has held the national title for the past two years running. More information will be shared with students by their classroom teacher.

Rehearsal for national live broadcast

Tuesday, January 29, 12:30-1:30 p.m., kindergarten to eighth grade

Dr. Jeff Burkhart from Concordia, St. Paul, Minn., will help practice the songs students will be singing for the national live broadcast on Thursday.

St. Martin’s goes bowling!

Wednesday, January 30, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Winona Bowl

The school will celebrate the ministry of Lutheran education by enjoying an afternoon bowling! Extra parent supervision is needed for this event. If you would like to join, please let the classroom know.

Live, national broadcast for National Schools Week

Thursday, January 31, 1-1:30 p.m., St. Martin’s Sanctuary, 328 Broadway, Winona

St. Martin’s is very honored to have been chosen as the site for the National Lutheran School Broadcast that Concordia, St. Paul, will lead in worship and praise. Many conference schools will be in attendance for this very special Chapel. All are encouraged and invited to attend.

Very Important People (VIP) Day

Friday, February 1 (VIPs RSVP by Thursday, January 24, through the office)

Family and friends are invited to join for a very special afternoon chapel and attend the fifth-ever St. Martin’s School Talent Show for all grades from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the school gymnasium. All VIPs are invited to attend lunch as well. The cost for an adult meal is $3.86.
