Winona YMCA to host Women’s Empowerment Expo

Between a self-defense class and a panel of strong women speakers it’ll be hard for a woman not to feel empowered after walking out of the Winona Family YMCA on March 31.

On Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. the Y will be hosting the Winona Women’s Empowerment Expo where an hour long self defense class, a tea party during a conversation with a panel of speakers, vendors, DIY crafts, guided painting, and five-minute chair massages will be offered. The event comes after a month of various activities and programs geared toward youth at the Y, including a young women’s empowerment seminar where youth heard from speakers including Miss Minnesota Teen USA Olivia Herbert.

With the month coming to a close, the Y wanted to usher the end its theme of women empowerment in by offering a public event to bring women of all generations together to learn from each other and celebrate being a woman.

“We wanted to celebrate the women in Winona by giving them the tools to do so,” one of the organizers, Miranda Maurer, said recently. “We’re doing that through the topics of self defense, self care, and by hearing first hand from women who have overcome obstacles through their own journeys.”

The panel of speakers is comprised of well-known women in the Winona area, including new city council member Eileen Moeller, Teri Tenseth, Tesla Mitchell, student athlete Summer Downs, and Women in Business Board of Directors member Jenn Rohrer. The speakers have a robust list of personal stories and powerful perspectives to share, including the challenges of being a female bodybuilder and a self advocate for personal health, the struggles of being a woman athlete in Rugby, the challenges of being taken seriously when asking important questions or when running for an election, and the small tweaks that a woman can make in order to embody more self confidence and demand presence.

Entry is $5 per person and is open to the public. For more information, reach out to Tesla Mitchell, marketing and communications coordinator, at
