A Matter of Faith: Part two: actual decision theology

“Predestination”: the King James Version (KJV) Bible uses forms of that word multiple times. It is better represented by a phrase. Here is an example of how it can be understood: A teacher has 30 students in her classroom. In order to dismiss them in an orderly fashion, she designates them beforehand into three groups of ten. At the bell, she dismisses one group at a time.

The phrase “designate beforehand” is more descriptive and accurate than “predestinate” in Scripture. The verses following are from the Concordant Literal Version.

• Ro. 8:29: “that, whom He foreknew, He designates beforehand, also, to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be Firstborn among many brethren.”

• Ro. 8:30: “Now whom He designates beforehand, these He calls also, and whom He calls, these He justifies also; now whom He justifies, these He glorifies also.”

• Eph. 1:5: “in love designating us beforehand for the place of a son for Him through Christ Jesus; in accord with the delight of His will …”

• Eph. 1:11: “in Him in Whom our lot was cast also, being designated beforehand according to the purpose of the One Who is operating all in accord with the counsel of His will …”

Believers are designated beforehand according to His purpose. They are not chosen according to their decision to believe. They believe now because they had been designated beforehand in accord with His will.

This is an affront to our sense of fairness, our human ethics. In understanding God, we should attempt not to use our ethics to judge His. He is sovereign. He doesn’t just know the end from the beginning, He TELLS the end from the beginning: Is. 46:10: “Telling from the beginning, the hereafter, And from aforetime what has not yet been done, Saying, All My counsel, it shall be confirmed, And all My desire shall I do …”

We may think we know better; yet, we have only limited abilities and compromised knowledge at our disposal. That is why faith is given and where faith enters in. That is the why and the where; the how is designated beforehand by God, The Placer.
