John S. “Red” Schreiber Jr., age 83, of Winona, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at Winona Health.

He was born on July 5, 1937, in Winona, to John and Harriet (Plinski) Schreiber Sr., and honorably served his country with the United States Army. John was united in marriage with Suzanne M. Schneider on October 9, 1965, at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church in Winona.

Prior to his retirement, John was employed for 40 years with the city of Winona Park and Recreation Department’s “Tree Crew.” He will be remembered for his enjoyment of hunting, fishing, bowling (he was a member of the 300 and 700 clubs), and trips to the casino. He was a member of St. Casimir’s Catholic Church in Winona.

John is lovingly survived by his wife, Suzanne; sons, Richard and Steven; brother, Ken (Betty) Schreiber, Winona; sisters, Mary Ann (Larry Loken) Moham, Winona, Irene (George) Forster, Pensacola, Fla., and Diana (Jack) Simon, Winona; step-brother, Tim (Lori) Smith, Cochrane, Wis.; step-sister, Cheryl (Robert Santini) Lange, St. Albans, Vt.; sisters-in-law, Ruthann Schreiber, Pensacola, Fla., Patricia Schreiber, Nelson, Wis., Judy Wolfe, Cochrane, Wis., and Janice Schneider, Savage, Minn.; his beloved dog, Buddy; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including “adopted grandchildren,” Brittny, Michael, Harrison, Elliot, Tricia, and Nichole. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leonard, Richard, and Paul; sister and brother-in-law, Patty and Al Smith; and brothers-in-law, John Wolfe and Raymond Schneider.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church in Winona. The Very Reverend Mark C. McNea will officiate. Following the Mass, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors outside the church. A family burial will be held at a later date. A celebration of John’s life will continue at the Jaycee’s Pavilion at Lake Park following the military honors.

Those attending the funeral and celebration of life are reminded to wear a mask, and to follow CDC and social-distancing guidelines.
