The Green Grocer: All I ever really needed to know I learned from my school lunch

Parents, we have the opportunity of a lifetime! We can teach our kids about love, responsibility, self-care, discipline and healthy eating habits in one fell swoop — what a deal! Let’s teach our kids how to pack a lunch!

When we teach kids how to choose what food to put in their lunch, we teach them how to eat and we give them the gift of variety.

When we teach kids how much food to pack in their lunch, we teach them the discipline of portions and we give them the gift of recognizing what is enough.

When we teach kids how to make food for their lunches, we teach them self-care skills and we give them the gift of empowerment.

When we teach kids creative ways to use leftovers, we teach them to care about food and we give them the gift of finding fulfillment in what they have.

When we teach kids that they are capable of feeding themselves, we teach them that their choices matter and we give them the gift of confidence.

When we teach kids to use reusable sandwich bags and lunchboxes, we teach them respect for their home and we give them the gift of responsibility.

When we sneak notes into their lunches, we teach them what it means to love and we give them the gift of feeling loved.
