Dream Closet, a student-run volunteer organization at Winona State University, will host the eighth free shopping event on Sunday, November 17, 2019, from noon to 3 p.m. at the East Side Recreation Center, located at 210 Zumbro Street, Winona.
Since beginning the first free shopping event in April 2016, Dream Closet Winona has made this bi-annual event bigger and better each time. “This is a free shopping event that involves no registration for our shoppers. Our organization was created to help all members in our community with providing gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories for all seasons. We are excited to see the continuous growth in our organization and we hope to keep providing a memorable shopping experience for as many community members as possible,” said Afton Bergdahl, team lead of the Dream Closet organization.
The Dream Closet team has been actively collecting men’s, women’s and children’s clothing throughout the past few weeks. “Community members can also take part by donating to boxes located throughout Winona State University’s campus, Hy-Vee, Bluff Country Co-Op, and Midtown Foods,” said Bergdahl.
Guests are encouraged to not only come to attend the event but also use Dream Closet’s volunteers to maximize their shopping experience and help them find what they need. “You are angels sent from heaven. This is a blessing!” said a guest at a past event.

About Dream Closet
Founded in November 2013, Kylie Romashko, a junior attending Minnesota State University, Mankato, saw the need for clothing in the community and the lack of funds to get them. She reached out to her local YWCA to help launch her idea of a free shopping event. In December 2013, with the help of the YWCA and many others, the first Dream Closet event came to life with great success.
Members of Winona State University heard of this event and immediately felt the need to bring it to Winona. Originally held as a holiday event, Dream Closet events are now held every spring and winter to meet the seasonal needs for different clothing. Running solely on donations from the community, Dream Closet is passionate about providing confidence, compassion, and a sense of community to all with much-needed clothing for free during their events.
