According to the National Day Calendar, March has some special recognition days. For instance, March 1 is National Pig Day, March 2 is Banana Cream Pie Day, March 11 is National Funeral Director and Mortician Day, March 13 is National K-9 Veteran Day and on March 16, Central Lutheran Church will be celebrating National Quilting Day.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the church is inviting you to an event to see the lovely quilts the quilting group makes to send to Lutheran World Relief’s mission project. Last year, the group assembled and shipped 306 bed quilts to be included in over 600,000 quilts made by Evangelical Lutheran Church groups all over the U.S. A few of the places the quilts will be distributed to include Angola, Africa; Honduras, Central America; Lebanon in the Middle East; Serbia, Eastern Europe; and India. Sixteen fabric kits, 71 personal care kits, and 83 school backpacks with school supplies were also sent to countries of need. Additionally, the group assembles baby care kits for missions, gifts quilts to graduating high school seniors, and gives a baby quilt to each child baptized in Central Lutheran.
At the quilting event on Saturday, March 16, the group of quilters will demonstrate how the quilts are created, assembled and finished, and invites you to be part of tying quilt tops for completion. It is not an activity just for grandmas anymore! The quilters are especially proud of the part they play in providing warmth and comfort to those in need and would love for you to be part of this endeavor. Students, moms, dads, retirees — all are welcome. The quilters meet weekly (except for the month of December and in bad weather) on Tuesday mornings, and if you have never done quilting, the quilters can instruct you in whatever you would need to know.
Join Central Lutheran Church, 259 West Seventh Street in Winona, for coffee and refreshments on National Quilting Day; you can come for 15 minutes or stay the whole four hours. All are welcome.
