Robert Lauria, a certified nurse practitioner (CNP), has joined the Winona Health emergency department team.
Lauria chose Winona Health because, “I’ll have the chance to practice exceptional medicine in a small-town environment where we can provide more individualized care and form relationships with patients and other providers. The people here are amazing in terms of friendliness and willingness to help each other.”
Lauria followed a non-traditional path to arrive at his current destination. “I knew I wanted to be a nurse since I was 15,” he said. “I’d read medical atlases cover to cover.” However, before going to nursing school, Lauria decided to serve his country and see the world. He served in the United States Navy for 27 years before going to nursing school. After more than 10 years as a registered nurse caring for patients in intensive care and medical/surgical units and in the emergency department, Lauria decided to pursue a nurse practitioner degree. He said, “As a registered nurse, I became more and more interested in being able to make the diagnosis and develop the most effective treatment plan.”
He went on to earn his Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and completed his nurse practitioner residency program at the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minn. He is certified the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Lauria is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the U.S. Navy Chiefs Association and the American Gulf War Veterans Association.
Lauria and his wife have three children. In his free time, he enjoys boating, biking, working on projects around the house and spending time with family.
