Kujak Sr., Daniel Joseph

Daniel Joseph Kujak Sr., age 87, of Winona, died on Sunday, December 15, 2013, at his home surrounded by his loved ones.

Daniel was born on March 15, 1926, in Pine Creek, Wis., to Stanley and Anna (Wantoch) Kujak. He was raised in Pine Creek on the Montana Ridge farm, and was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Creek. He graduated in 1944 from Cotter High School in Winona.

He met Leona in a bowling alley, where they both set up pins for a nickel a game. Daniel married Leona Mae Benson on October 10, 1946, and they celebrated 60 years together before his loving wife passed away on November 23, 2006.

Leona and Daniel had 15 children – 12 sons and three daughters. His life centered around his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Daniel was affectionately called “Big Hearted Dan!” They invited numerous children and other adults into their hearts and home. Those that benefited from his love and kindness were the luckiest people in the world.

He worked at Froedtert Malt for 40 years and seven months; from 1947 to 1988. He was the Lead Man for Malt House 1, where he made malt for all of the major beer companies.

Daniel was a devout Catholic, and he was here to know, love and serve our Lord, and thereby gain his way to everlasting life. His faith was his guiding light – before he passed, he felt blessed after receiving communion and being anointed to know that he would soon receive the miracle of everlasting life.

Daniel fully enjoyed life! He had a great sense of humor, and loved talking, watching sports like football (Go Packers!), golf, and bowling; watching TV shows such as Wheel of Fortune, Hee-Haw, and the Lawrence Welk Show; and sharing life with his family and friends. He enjoyed playing card games, especially cribbage and buck euchre. Daniel also occasionally loved drinking beer, Chivas Regal, and Christian Brothers brandy. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona where he participated in Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist for over 15 years.

Daniel is lovingly survived by his ten sons and three daughters: Gary (Shar); John; Chris (Dennis); Daniel Jr. (Kathy), Edward (Danelle),James (Lori), Walter (Holly), Andrew (Kathy), Brian; Nancy (Nancy), Jeff, Kathy (Terry), and Anthony, 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren who are expected soon; a sister, Ann Marie Daw; as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona (Benson), sons Howard and Stanley, parents, three brothers: Roman, Edward, and Alphonse; and four sisters: Hattie, Jean, Angie, and Kay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona. Father James Berning will officiate.

Daniel will be laid to rest in the spring at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Pine Creek, Wis.

Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. There will not be any visitation held on Thursday, please meet at the church for the Mass.
