Elaine Ann Papenfuss, 82, of Winona, died on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Lake Winona Manor.

Elaine Ann Papenfuss was born on December 30, 1933, to John Everett Balch and Lillian (Lingenfelter) Balch in Winona. Elaine attended Wilson District 16 country school, graduated from Winona High School in 1951, and graduated with a B.S. degree from Winona State University in May 1954.

She married Ellsworth Earl Papenfuss on August 6, 1954, at the Witoka Methodist Church. They moved to La Crosse, Wis., where Elaine taught third grade at Jefferson School for six years from 1954-1960. In 1958, Ellsworth and Elaine moved to La Crescent, Minn., where they lived until 2000. Elaine taught fourth grade in La Crescent for 30 years from 1966 to 1996. She was a member of the La Crescent Education Association, the Minnesota Education Association, and the National Education Association. She was named “Teacher of the Year” for La Crescent in 1977. Elaine was a member of the La Crescent United Methodist Church for 44 years. During those years she was a member of the Women’s Society, taught Sunday School, Bible School, and was a member of various committees.

In 2000, Ellsworth and Elaine moved back to Elaine’s home farm between Wilson and Witoka. The farm has been in Elaine’s family since 1869. Ellsworth and Elaine enjoyed living there again and were happy to be near children and grandchildren. Elaine was proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren plus her two cats. They remember the many Sunday and holiday dinners she cooked them and the overnight stays at Grandma’s house.

Elaine joined the Pleasant Valley Church in 2003.

Elaine is survived by her three sons, Duane (Karen Hansen) of Winona, Minn., Mark (Wendy) of Cambridge, Wis., Brian (Bridget) of Winona. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Kelsey, Brody, McKenna, Brianne, Gretchen, Lydia, Pearl, Tyler and Morgan Papenfuss and Jason Wehausen; three great-grandchildren, William, Emma and Charlotte Walters. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ellsworth (2013).

A visitation will be held on Monday, January 11, 2016, from 4-7 p.m. at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior at Pleasant Valley Church, Winona. Burial will be at the Witoka Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Duane, Brian, Mark, Tyler and Brody Papenfuss.
