Icy roads cause two fatalities

(12/26/2007)

Police said that snowy and icy road conditions contributed to two separate car accident fatalities in the region Saturday.

Sara E. Spohn, 23, of Arcadia, Wis., was pronounced dead at the scene just before 5 p.m. She was traveling northbound on Highway 53 near Galesville when she lost control of her vehicle, traveled across the center line and collided head-on with a truck. The driver and occupant of the truck suffered minor injuries.

Robert J. Maurice, 47, of Oconomowoc, Wis., was killed in a single-car accident while traveling eastbound on I-90 near St. Charles. He was ejected from his Toyota 4Runner when it went into the median and rolled.

Another weekend accident on I-90 near Lewiston sent six to the hospital, and the Sheriff's Department reported about a half-dozen cars in ditches as well. Within Winona city limits, five vehicle accidents caused no serious injuries.
