A snowmobile accident Sunday night has left an Elba man in serious condition after police said he flew 51 feet through the air and hit a tree.
Douglas John Heim, 44, of Elba, was airlifted to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse, Wis., and listed in serious condition Monday morning. Police said he was wearing a helmet but that it broke off in the crash.
Police believe Heim was traveling 75 mph along County Road 8 near Elba when he hit a driveway. The hit launched Heim and the snowmobile 51 feet through the air before colliding with a tree. Heim then fell to the ground and a neighbor called for help.
Police said his condition was life-threatening Sunday evening, and believed that the high rate of speed was the cause of the accident.
