A 22-year-old Wisconsin man was killed on U.S. Highway 61 early Monday after police believe his vehicle struck another vehicle and rolled down a ditch.
Phillip L. Compton, 22, of Westby, Wis., was found dead in his vehicle along Highway 61 between LaMoille and Homer at around 4:30 a.m. The Winona County Sheriff's Department was responding to a call of a loud black Ford Mustang along the highway when they received another call reporting a vehicle had been struck by a car headed southbound in the wrong lane.
About a half-mile down the highway, a La Crescent police officer noticed a Mustang hubcap on the side of the road. Compton's body was found inside the Mustang, and the Minnesota State Patrol reported that he was wearing his seat belt.
Mary L. Braatz, 62, of Winona, was driving the vehicle police believe Compton struck before going into the ditch. Her Ford Tempo reportedly spun around from the impact. She was not injured.
