Officer remains in critical condition
The Mayo Clinic Medical Examiner today identified the man found inside a Lake City home yesterday afternoon who is suspected of shooting a Lake City police officer. The preliminary autopsy found Alan John Sylte, Jr., 25, of Hager City, Wisconsin, died as the result of suicide by a gunshot wound to the head.
Early Monday morning, two Lake City Police Department officers responded to 618 West Lyon Avenue for a reported domestic involving a handgun. Officer Shawn Schneider, 32, was shot upon arrival. Officials at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester say Officer Schneider is in critical condition. The other responding officer was not injured. Law enforcement from Lake City, Wabasha and Red Wing police departments, Wabasha, Goodhue and Olmsted county sheriff’s offices, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Minnesota State Patrol established a perimeter around the residence and entered the home at 3:24 p.m. Law enforcement personnel found Sylte’s body inside the home.
Agents and crime scene personnel with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the shooting. Once their investigation is complete, they will present their findings to the Wabasha County Attorney’s Office.
