New bridge grand opening August 27

(7/6/2016)

A community celebration has been planned for Aug. 27 to mark the opening of the new Winona bridge, and kickoff the rehabilitation work for the existing historic bridge.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) has been working with a planning committee that is organizing the public celebration for the bridge. Judy Bodway and Vicki Decker, both of Winona, are leading the committee.

An 11 a.m. event is planned with speeches, music and an opportunity for the public to walk on the bridge before it is opened to traffic. The Winona Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors will celebrate the event with ribbon cutting following the ceremony. The Winona time capsule that will be later placed inside the new bridge will be on display.

“The construction of a new bridge in a community is a rare and significant event in its history, so we want to make sure this event is celebrated and remind folks that there is still work ahead with the rehabilitation of the historic bridge,” said Winona Mayor Mark Peterson.

Meanwhile, work continues to stay on schedule as Ames Construction, the contractor, keeps the project on track to open to traffic later in the day on Aug. 27. The project involves building a new two-lane bridge upstream from the existing bridge and then rehabilitating the existing two-lane bridge. The project is scheduled to be complete in 2019.

Mn/DOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
