The Cotter Ramblers varsity girls basketball team dragged out a win from the Chatfield Gophers on Friday night, giving them 9-2 for the season and placing them second in the Three Rivers conference at 5-1-0.
The lady Ramblers didn’t let Chatfield get ahead of them on Friday, although Chatfield never lagged too far behind. Junior Rambler #24, the nimble and fast Isabel Northrop, was at the center of most Cotter plays, staking out territory at the top of the key as the main scorer of the game. Cotter guards Megan and Mary Morgan gave the Gophers constant grief, with quick hands and speed. Mary Morgan frequently found herself surrounded by much taller Chatfield players, but didn’t seem to notice, as the Ramblers passing game in the offense frequently stymied the visiting Gophers. It wasn’t an effortless game, though; Chatfield kept Cotter moving until the last period, when victory wasn’t guaranteed. Cotter #15 Josie Huelskamp picked up a perfect opportunity to pull ahead, snagging a slippery ball from the Cotter end and leaving Chatfield in her dust, running undefended to sink one in the arc and tacking on two free throws, allowing the Ramblers to pull ahead and win with 11 points.
Cotter meets Waseca on December 27 and Kasson-Mantorville on December 28 at Winona State for the Girls Varsity Holiday Tournament.
