International Owl Awareness Day open house August 4

(7/30/2018)

Celebrate International Owl Awareness Day in Houston on Saturday, August 4, by coming to the International Owl Center’s free open house, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meet the center’s ambassador owls (great horned owl, Eurasian eagle owl, and American barn owl), enjoy owl-themed refreshments, and take in one of the four programs offered that day:

11 a.m. — Owl Detectives (owl identification; good for all ages)
12:30 p.m. — Real Life Great Horned Owl Soap Opera (behavioral and vocal interactions of the wild owls with the center’s captive owls; best for teenagers and adults)
2 p.m. — Owls and Us Game Show (geared for kids and the young at heart)
3:30 p.m. — Around the World with Owls (learn about amazing individual owls and the people who work with them; geared toward adults)

Humans are the biggest problem for owls the world over. That also means humans are their greatest hope. The Owl Center encourages people to help owls by using traps instead of poison to control rodents, leaving dead trees standing when it’s safe to do so, taking down unused barbed wire, keeping cats indoors, mowing less lawn, and using less paper.
