On National VFW Day Post 1287, 208 East Third Street, Winona, is inviting its friends, members and their families to join for an open house from 2-5 p.m. Membership eligibility requirements and applications will be available for those who may be interested in joining the VFW. This is an opportunity to talk with members about their service and about what the VFW can do for veterans and the community. Light refreshments will be served.
The VFW was established on September 29, 1899, by a group of veterans from the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. It has since grown to be the nation’s largest and most dedicated group of combat veterans. VFW membership has been instrumental in the establishment of the Veterans Administration, the creation of the national cemetery system and passage of the GI Bill. Through the VFW, veterans honor veterans and serve their communities.
Each year on September 29, National VFW Day is celebrated at Posts and in communities around the world. It’s a day devoted to the organization and its members who are deeply committed to serving those who bravely serve this nation. For 119 years the VFW has been unwavering in its devotion to our nation’s heroes. Whether it’s the fight for health care for veterans, education for veterans or legislation for veterans, “No one does more for veterans!”
