POW/MIA Recognition Day Sept. 20

(9/18/2019)

National POW/MIA Recognition Day will be observed on Friday, September 20. This annual event reminds all Americans to take the time to remember those who were prisoners of war and those who are missing in action, as well as their families. Winona VFW Post 1287 will recognize this day by setting the Missing Man Table and presenting the ceremony at 4 pm. All are encouraged to attend.

According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, as of September 6, 2019, over 82,000 Americans who fought in wars are still missing, including:

• 72,669 World War II

• 7,624 from the Korean War

• 1,587 from Vietnam

• 126 from the Cold War

• 5 from Gulf Wars

Efforts to find those men, identify them and bring them home are constant. It’s important to remember the extreme sacrifices of our POW/MIAs and America’s pact to them: That we will take care of them and, no matter how much time has passed, they will make it back home.

VFW Post 1287 is located at 208 East Third Street.
