Recertification credits available for manure spreaders

Minnesota commercial manure applicators licensed for application in Minnesota, Iowa or both, can receive recertification credits for one or both licenses by attending one of three workshops offered in Iowa on January 6, 2004.

Through the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's Commercial Animal Waste Technicians (CAWT) Licensure program, waste applicators are licensed for three years. Applicators are required to attend recertification workshops in two of those three years in order to renew their license.

Recertification workshops provide valuable information on a variety of topics regarding water quality, land application of manure and nutrient management. The workshops also incorporate critical information and updates on the Minnesota 7020 Feedlot Rule. Continued education and training helps ensure manure is applied in an economical and environmentally friendly manner.

The following workshops are approved CAWT recertification workshops. All are free and sponsored by the MDA and the Iowa State University Extension Service.

Howard County Extension Office, 132 First Avenue West, Cresco, Iowa, 52136. Phone: 563-547-3001.

Winnebago County Extension Office, 183 1st Avenue East, Thompson, Iowa, 50478. Phone: 641-584-2261.

Dickinson County Extension Office, 1600 15th Street, Spirit Lake, Iowa, 51360. Phone: 712-336-3488.

Registration for all of the workshops begins at 8:30 a.m., and the workshops will run until 12:30 p.m. Minnesota applicators will be required to stay an additional hour to receive credit.
