Live golden eagle program

Saturday, January 12, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Find out about golden eagles in the bluff lands from the man who knows them best. National Eagle Center Education Director and Golden Eagle Project Co-coordinator Scott Mehus will share his years of experience observing golden eagles in Southeast Minnesota and Wisconsin. You’ll learn how to identify golden eagles in the wild and some of the best places to look for these elusive raptors.

Wintering Golden Eagle Survey training

Saturday, January 12, 12-3 p.m.

This training is offered for those who plan to volunteer with the Wintering Golden Eagle Survey on January 19. Scott Mehus from the National Eagle Center in Wabasha will introduce you to the natural history of the golden eagle and will teach you how to tell the difference between these birds and their look-alike, the immature bald eagle. HOP into the Park (Healthy Older People)

Wednesday, January 16, 10-11 a.m.

The HOP (Healthy Older People) program is a monthly program where are can learn about nature and socialize with other older adults! This month, hear from a Minnesota State Parks resource specialist who will talk about the detailed resource management efforts that go into state parks. Learn why Minnesota state parks are more than just campgrounds!

Wintering Golden Eagle Survey

Saturday, January 19, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join other trained survey volunteers to patrol the Whitewater State Park survey area and document observations of wintering golden eagles. The data collected on this survey is critical to the management and protection of these amazing birds. To sign up, email sara.holger@state.mn.us or call 507-312-2308. (Survey participants MUST attend the Golden Eagle Survey training on January 12.)

Take a Kid Ice Fishing

Saturday, January 19, 1-3 p.m.

During the Take a Kid Ice Fishing weekend, Minnesota residents fish for free when accompanied by a child age 15 or under. Meet at the Halfmoon Landing near Kellogg and traverse the Mississippi River backwaters for some special family time! All equipment is provided, but space is limited! Centennial event: Ghost camp by candlelight

Saturday, January 26, 6-8 p.m.

Join at the Nature Store and help kick off the celebration of 100 years of park history by walking through a place lost to time. On this cool January evening attendees will visit the camp that housed hundreds of young men who helped Whitewater become the state park it is today. A guided walk will lead you through the lit layout of the camp and help you learn about the daily experiences of the hard-working young men that molded Whitewater from the wilderness. Registration is required; to sign up, email Jeremy.Darst@state.mn.us or call 507-312-2307. The registration deadline is January 23.
