On January 6 Dick Kowles, emeritus professor from Saint Mary’s University, gave the Learning Club his 15th program on genetics, specifically a presentation of the benefits and dangers of radiation. He briefly explained some basics of the nature of radiation, followed by the applications of its use in the medical practices of diagnosis and therapy. In addition, he elucidated other uses besides the medical field. He explained that everyone is constantly exposed to background radiation and those sources were thoroughly outlined. Exposure to radiation and the possibility of causing genetic problems, along with other issues, were a large part of the presentation. These dangers were analyzed from the standpoint of resultant risks, the extent of their occurrence, and depicted with pertinent examples.
