Homer Church Gospel Hour celebrates 25 years

Hear the bell? Homer Church’s Gospel Hour announcer Mike Dailey is inviting everyone to come on in and worship with the congregation! Sunday, September 16, will mark the gospel hour’s 25th anniversary and the 300th monthly musical outreach broadcast on KAGE Radio from the 160-year-old church.

It all began in October 1993, with a once-a-month broadcast with local musician and radio personality John Bernadot playing keyboard, guitar and drums and leading the congregation in old Gospel praise songs. Soon, Puppet Bob (a.k.a. Rick Thorn) joined the broadcast with then student local pastor Jeffrey Olson acting as his straight man. Today, Cindy Gerdes helps Bob tell his story and is billed as his best friend. Children young and old enjoy the wisdom that he imparts as he teaches Bible lessons in a humorous way.

When Bernadot suffered a brain injury, local musician friends began to fill the huge void he left and the music never stopped. A variety of musical witnesses have graced the small sanctuary over the years: bluegrass bands, opera singers, polka bands, contemporary groups, a harpist and a John Denver sound-alike, just to mention a few. The congregation nearly doubles on Gospel Hour Sundays as attendees enjoy beautiful praise music, a spirit-lifting, abbreviated message and a bit more relaxed way to worship.

Current Pastor Rev. Kathy Schuler has served the church for seven years. She is the sixth minister to officiate since the beginning of the Gospel Hour. On the wall above her podium in two-foot tall letters reads the words of Psalm 95, “Sing for Joy to the Lord.” Indeed the congregation hopes to for years to come.

The musical witnesses for the Sunday, September 16, celebration will be Joe Cody and Dominic Orrico with very special guest John Bernadot. Everyone is invited to join or tune in to the live broadcast on KAGE Radio 13.80 AM at 9 a.m. Refreshments and fellowship will follow.
