Houston County Historical Society Archaeology Month Program


The Houston County Historical Society will host a program on September 23, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the new museum in Caledonia, Minn.

Dale E. Maul, of Faribault, Minn., will give a presentation regarding the late prehistoric Native American groups in Southeast Minnesota. The timeframe of these groups are 1400-1500 AD to 1700 AD. Photos of artifacts from the University of Minnesota, Minnesota Science Museum, private collections, Houston County Historical Society Collections, Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, Minnesota Historical Society, and Mr. Maul’s previous research will be shown.

Maul is a retired professional archaeologist, former president of Minnesota’s professional archaeologist group, and is a registered professional archaeologist (RPA). Maul received his BA from St. Cloud State University and a MS from Minnesota State University-Mankato. He has worked in 11 states in the U.S. from the Great Plains to the southern Plains. His master’s thesis was “The Orr Phase Revisited: Movement and Transition of a People.”

Mervin G. Floodman, a retired archaeologist, along with Maul, will review artifacts brought in by the public after the presentation. Mervin is a retired archaeologist who worked for the United States Forest Service in North Dakota. Mervin received his BA from St. Cloud State University and his MA from Northern Colorado University.
