The Quilts of Valor group is again producing a quilt show to honor veterans for their service. The group is part of a larger organization that has presented thousands of quilts to veterans.
The group started the Buffalo County Chapter in May 2017 and has thus far given away more than 70 quilts. It is a volunteer group which consists of 16 women from Alma, Fountain City, Buffalo City, Cochrane, Lake City, Minn., and the surrounding rural areas, sponsored by the Burlington Quilt Shop of Alma.
More information on the rules and procedures can be found at www.qovf.org. Requests for quilts can also be made at this website, and at the Burlington Quilt Shop.
This year the group made 60-plus quilts for distribution at the Veterans Day programs celebrating Veterans Day at the Buffalo County Schools in November. The Veterans Day programs at the schools keep the community involved and create a meaningful presentation for the veteran and his or her /family. There are over 800 veterans in Buffalo County.
The group will show its completed Quilts of Valor for this year at the quilt show at the VFW Club in Cochrane, and other quilts and quilted creations at the Herman Rusch Prairie Moon Sculpture Garden and Museum on September 20 from 4-8 p.m. and on September 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please reserve that date and come and see the quilts. The group made a beautiful raffle quilt — tickets are available at the area local banks for purchase. Money earned will be used to purchase fabrics and supplies for the creation of the Quilts of Valor that are given to veterans.
Lunch will be served at the VFW Club by its Women’s Auxiliary organization.
All of the Quilts of Valor will be presented at the various Veterans Day celebrations at local schools, the Cochrane-Fountain City School, the Alma School, the Gilmanton School, and the Mondovi School. Please watch their school calendars for times and dates in November 2019.
If you are a Buffalo County veteran and are not a member of an American Legion, or VFW, to receive a quilt and be recognized you need to register at www.qovf.org. Veterans who are members of local organizations will have their names submitted by their commanders. Organizers look forward to the presentation of quilts at the school Veterans Day programs.
