Winona's Green Mill restaurant will close this coming Saturday, June 6, and a new independently operated restaurant will take its place, tentatively scheduled to open in July. That's according to manager Alex Garrett, who said the new dining spot will be called "River City Grill," and is expected to be focused on a more "farm-to-table aspect" than its Italian franchise predecessor.
"For 22 years we have enjoyed working with the Green Mill franchise owners from the Twin Cities," said The Plaza Hotel and Suites owner Mike Rivers. "They have a great restaurant concept and will continue with many locations throughout the Midwest. We, however, have taken the opportunity to make changes.
"The decision to change was a result of listening to our guests, our kitchen, servers, and management team," he continued. "We needed a change and fresh new concept for Winona."
While final planning and menu selections are not complete, Garrett and Rivers explained that River City Grill will focus on fresh, local ingredients. "We're going to be trying to source a lot of what we can from Winona County and the surrounding areas," Garrett said.
The physical restaurant space is undergoing some remodeling projects and a few more changes are in the works. "The place should look and feel different than when we were operating as Green Mill," Garrett shared.
Rivers said the entire staff in the kitchen, lounge, and floor management will stay with the restaurant change.
As the popular Italian restaurant chain attached to The Plaza Hotel and Suites nears its final days, customers will still have the chance to take home a pizza or other menu favorite. The Green Mill will be open today and tomorrow, Wednesday, June 3, and Thursday, June 4, from 4-8 p.m. for take-out orders; and on Friday and Saturday, June 5-6, from 4-10 p.m. The River City Grill will continue to honor all valid Green Mill gift cards/certificates at the new River City Grill for the unexpired amount, Rivers said.
