Winona State University (WSU) senior Michael Schmitz has been dubbed the 2018-19 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Men’s Preseason Golfer of the Year, in a vote by league coaches.
In a close team vote, the Warriors have been picked to finish second in the preseason coaches’ poll behind Minnesota State Mankato. The Mavericks, who edged the Warriors for the 2018 conference championship by three strokes last year, have been selected as the 2018-19 preseason favorite with five first-place votes and 75 total points. Winona State garnered three first-place votes and totaled 73 points.
Schmitz, the 2015-16 NSIC Newcomer of the Year, is one of six returning Warriors this season. Schmitz is a two-time NSIC First Team All-Conference recipient and was named the NSIC Men’s Golfer of the Week three times during the 2017-18 campaign. The Bloomington, Minn., native ranked second in the NSIC in scoring average last year (73.4). Schmitz concluded his 2017-18 season by qualifying and finishing 61st at the Central/Midwest Super Regional.
Schmitz and Ben Jasper make up the senior leadership on the Warriors’ 2018-19 squad, along with juniors Tyler Beeck, Bentley Glass and Isaac Westlake, each of whom contributed last season. Hammish Brown is also a junior who transferred to Winona State this year.
Sophomore Brady Madsen ranked third on the team in scoring as a rookie (75.2). The Warriors welcome four new freshmen to the team this season.
