Last Friday was senior night for the Winona-Cotter high school gymnastics team, as they paid tribute to the four senior athletes and two senior team managers who are in their last year with the team. Gymnasts Shelby Koetz, Callie Van Dyck, Adamary Rosas, and managers Gracie Larsen and Camron Hawkinson were honored by their team.
The Winona team also faced off with all three of Rochester’s gymnastics teams last Friday: Mayo, Century, and John Marshall high schools. The large number of competitors made the gym a busy place, but all four teams exhibited sportsmanship, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere.
Century had beaten Winona earlier this season, but the home team’s beam set helped Winona best their Rochester rivals. “Four out of five beam routines stuck and gave the highest beam team score of the season,” Coach Brittney Graham said. Winona’s score for the meet was 137.575, putting them at the top for the evening. Century and Mayo trailed with 132.525 and 129.8, respectively.
Winona’s co-captain, senior Callie Van Dyck, was at the top of both varsity vault and bars, placing her in at number one for the all-around with 35.75. Her teammate Chloe Hughes was second with 34.65. Coach Graham said, “Callie Van Dyck made a big statement winning the all around. She is preparing for the competition at the Big Nine and sections.”
The next event for the Winona-Cotter team is a Big Nine Conference meet on February 10 at Rochester’s John Marshall High School.
In the vault, Callie Van Dyck finished first with a score of 9, Chloe Hughes took second with 8.8,. Amaya Rashid took third with 8.5, and Maddie Rashid and Lauren Pavelko tied for fourth with 8.5. In bars, Callie Van Dyck won first place with a score of 9.125. In beam, Adamary Rosas took second with 9.025. In the floor event, Chloe Hughes won first place with a score of 9.25, and Paige Hawkinson took second with 8.975. For all-around performance, Callie Van Dyck took first with 35.75; Chloe Hughes took second with 34.65. Winona won the meet with a score of 137.575. Century finished second with 132.525. Mayo took third with 129.8, and John Marshall finished fourth with 88.275 points.
