Elmer Lutzi Ruben, age 92, of Fountain City, died Monday, December 22, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.
Elmer was born on May 5, 1916, in the town of Cross, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, the sixth child of the late Andrew and Anna (Weiss) Ruben.
On October 3, 1945, Elmer was united in marriage to Belva Grace Arms at St. John’s Ev. Reformed Church in Fountain City. To this union five children were born.
Elmer worked for the Andrew and Ruth Stettler farm in Eagle Valley for eleven years. In the spring of 1946, Elmer and Belva took over the Ruben Family Farm. Together, they milked cows, raised pigs and grew crops such as corn, oats and hay. Elmer’s farming career started by learning to farm with a team of horses and finished by using a Ford diesel. Elmer retired from farming in 1977 when the farm was sold to his son, Wayne. Elmer and his wife built their retirement home on the
Southeast corner of the family farm in 1978. Elmer enjoyed many
activities such as playing 500, where he recently made a 10 no trump bid. Elmer’s family will remember him for his love of farming, picking corn for as long as he could get on the tractor, baling hay and telling his stories about his younger years working as a farm hand and Sunday car rides. But what he will be remembered for most of all is the love and care he provided for his entire family.
Elmer will be sadly missed by his wife of the past 63 years, Belva, of rural Fountain City, three sons: Richard Ruben of Fountain City, Wayne (Donna Servias) Ruben of Fountain City, and William “Bill” (Betsy Miller) Ruben of Trempealeau, two daughters, Jane (Pat Malotke) Ruben of Stratford, WI, Doris (friend, Wayne McCutchen) Ruben of Millville,
MN, three grandsons, Karl (Heather) Malotke, Scott Ruben and Zach Ruben, two granddaughters: Tina (Fred) Briggs Miranda Ruben, five
great-grandchildren, also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives,
godchildren and friends. Besides his parents, eight brothers and
sisters preceded Elmer in death.
A memorial service for Elmer will be held on Saturday, December 27, at 2:00 PM at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fountain City with Pastor Gregory Ferriss officiating. Burial of cremains will be held at Bohri’s Valley Cemetery in the spring. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, December 26, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, and again one hour prior to the memorial service
Saturday at the church. Honored to serve the Ruben Family, Talbot
