Edna B. Fried, 98, died peacefully December 26, 2009, at Park Health & Rehabilitation Center, St. Louis Park, MN. Her daughter Sue and son-in-law Rick Fons were at her bedside. She was admitted via emergency to Methodist Hospital on December 13 and to Park Health & Rehabilitation on December 18. Prior to this, she lived in the home of her daughter in Minnetonka, MN, for 12 years. She was born April 16, 1911, to Fred Brandhorst and Minnie (Luedtke) Brandhorst in Bohri’s Valley, Buffalo County, WI.
Edna attended Bohri’s Valley grade school and graduated from Winona Senior High School and Winona Secretarial School. She was a milliner salesperson and model for a women’s apparel firm in St. Paul, MN.
On June 17, 1935, in St. Paul, she married Melvin O. Fried, a Northwest Airline pilot. They moved to Fountain City in 1939 and operated a 21,000, broiler farm south of the city. Melvin died September 29, 1958, and their son, Don Melvin Fried, died August 12, 1959.
Edna worked as a secretary/bookkeeper at the C-FC Community Schools and retired in 1976. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fountain City, WI, United Church of Christ Women’s Guild and the Winona Shrine Auxiliary. She was a charter member of Chapter 249 Order of Eastern Star, Onalaska. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, cooking, baking and decorating. She loved music, square dancing and ballroom dancing.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and brother, Frederick O. Brandhorst. Edna is survived by one daughter, Susan B. Fons (Richard E.) of Minnetonka, MN; four grandchildren, Kyle R. Fons (Tracy), Eden Prairie, MN, Ryen D. Fons (Jill) and great- granddaughter Claire, Ann Arbor, MI, Garin R. Fons, Ann Arbor, MI and Kyah S. Fons, Washington, D.C.; one sister, Linda A. (Emil W.) Duellman, Minnetonka, MN; one brother-in-law, Robert Michael; eight nieces: Betty (Wayne) Buswell, Karen (Keith) Larsen, Marcia (Marcel) Kulas, Sandra (Mark) Bestul, Peggy (Steve) Erwin, Delores (Edward) Schlosser, Jeanne (Bob) Nelson, Carole (John) Zierden; and four nephews: Myron R. Fried, Marvin L. Fried, Richard J. Sarles and Joseph (Joan) J. Greshik (deceased 11-21-09).
Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Washburn-McReavy, Hopkins, MN. Funeral services will be at St. John’s United Church of Christ, in Fountain City, on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Gregory Ferriss officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the services. Burial will be at Fountain City Public Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Church of Christ of Fountain City.
