Evelyn Carolyn (Knutson) Fuglestad, 89, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family and loyal cat Bootie on December 22. She is survived by her children: Judee Brone (Gary), Ron Fuglestad, Nola Morawiecki (Frank), Debra Fuglestad, Annie Lewis (Ross); 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters: Margaret Poleshuk and Lola Foster and brother, Harold Kjelgaard. Preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Marvin, daughter, Lori Sylvester, grandson, Jesse Brone, brothers: Clifford Knutson and Richard Kjelgaard. Evie was born at her parents’ home near Douglas, ND, on October 19, 1921. She received her degree from Minot Teacher’s College and taught grades 1-8 in a one-room school for several years. She and Marv moved to Winona in 1950 where she soon became known as one of the best cooks, bread/cinnamon roll/pie bakers and pickle makers in town. People lined up at the church bake sale to buy her goodies. Her home was immaculate and filled with treasures from sales and auctions. She loved finding a bargain and/or out-dickering a rival bidder. After raising her kids, she worked at Winona Daycare and Key Kids where children loved her and her cooking. A staunch Republican to the end, she was very smart, had a wonderful sarcastic wit and was much kinder than she would lead you to believe. She taught Marv to dance and that’s what they’re doing now. A service will be held at Fort Snelling this spring. Memorials preferred to Grace Presbyterian Church, 222 E. Broadway, Winona, MN 55987 or charity of choice.
