Valentine Modjeski, age 96, of Winona, Minn., died on Saturday, December 24, 2011, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare.
Val was born on January 25, 1915, in Winona, Minn., to Valentine and Mary (Glisczenski) Modjeski. On July 2, 1938, he was united in marriage with Bernadine Janikowski; she preceded him in death on May 18, 2006.
For 37 years, Val was employed by the city of Winona and retired as its Street Superintendent in 1977. He was a member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Winona Athletic Club and its 24 Hour Club, Westfield Golf Club, Eagles, Redmen and the Civic Association.
Val is survived by his son, Thomas (Joan) Modjeski, Old Frontenac, Minn., daughter-in-law, Geri Modjeski, Winona, Minn., grandchildren, Lisa, Tim, Steve and Molly; great-grandchildren, Drew, Eric, Jill, Taylor, Megan and Alexandra; brothers, Richard Modjeski, Winona, Minn., and Gerald Modjeski, Winona, Minn., sisters, Genevieve Thompson, Mercer, Wis., and Delores Olson, Greendale, Wis., as well as other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bernadine; son, Lawrence Modjeski; four brothers and four sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Winona. The Very Reverend Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate. Val will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, on Friday, January 6, 2012, from 11:30 AM until the time of the Mass.
Pallbearers will be Richard Modjeski, Jerry Modjeski, Tim Modjeski, Steve Modjeski, Drew Modjeski and Eric Modjeski.
