Speltz, Shirley Mae

Shirley Mae Speltz, 87, of Winona, and formerly of Rollingstone, Minn., died Friday, December 14, 2012, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.

Shirley was born March 29, 1925, to Casimir and Ruth (Stracke) Rock in Kenosha, Wis. She graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School, Kenosha, Wis., in 1943 and then moved to Winona. In May 1947, she graduated from the College of St. Teresa, Winona, with a B.S. degree in chemistry and nutrition. While attending college, she met John Francis Speltz and on September 27, 1947, she married Francis at the Chapel of St. Mary of the Angels, College of Saint Teresa. They farmed outside of Rollingstone from 1947 to 1985 and they raised nine children. In 1985, they retired and moved to Goodview, Minn. Francis preceded her in death on June 1, 1994. Besides being a busy farm wife and mother, she had time to be involved in PTA, Girl Scouts, and 4H and in her leisure time, she enjoyed traveling and genealogy. She was formerly employed as a receptionist at Saint Anne and also a secretary for Home & Community Options.

Shirley was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Winona; St. Nicholas and St. Theresa Society of Catholic Aid Association, Holy Trinity Church, Rollingstone, Minn.; Saint Anne Hospice Auxiliary; and Luxembourg-American Society, Rollingstone. She was also a member of both the Holy Trinity Rollingstone and St. Mary’s Rosary societies.

She is survived by nine children: Barbara (Dennis) Gustin, Spokane Wash., William Speltz (and Sherri), Lewiston, Minn., Nancy (Dean) MacKenzie, Kenosha, Wis., Timothy (Linda) Speltz, Winona, Minn., Cynthia (Dean) Gipp, Cedar Falls, Iowa, Rebecca (Todd) Olson, Denver, Colo., Amy (Lyle) Johnson, Duluth, Minn., Nicholas Speltz, Winona, and Renee Speltz, Lenox, Mass.; 28 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and an infant daughter, Ann Marie Speltz, who died November 26, 1963.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012, at Chapel of Our Lady, Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona, with Msgr. Roy Literski officiating, assisted by Deacon Lyle Johnson. Interment will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Rollingstone, Minn.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with the Recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be at Saint Anne beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Casket bearers will be Shirley’s grandchildren: Russ, Andy, Laura, Chuck, Sara, Dan, Michael, Brian, Heather, Drew, Dean, Ben, Julia, Amy, Ryan, Crystal, John, Lance, Bill, Lindsey, Joe, Tim, Marissa, Katie, Corey, Matt, Logan and Sarah.
