Opal V. Oevering, 98, of Stockton, Minn., died Saturday, December 15, 2012, surrounded by her family at Lake Winona Manor, Winona, Minn.
Opal Virginia was born July 1, 1914, in Winona, Minn., to Jess and Winnifred (Moody) McElmury. She was a lifelong area resident. On April 29, 1933, she married John H. Oevering. They made their living by sharecropping until 1947, when they moved to Stockton. For Opal, everything was homemade. She made clothes, soap, baby blankets, and canned numerous fruits and vegetables. Her cooking was all from memory, no recipes, only a little bit of this and of that. After John died, April 5, 1977, she remained in Stockton and continued being the family matriarch. She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Winona. Opal was a member and attended Immanuel United Methodist Ladies Aid for the past 34 years. She was formerly employed at Ziebell’s Produce and Wincraft.
She is survived by seven children: Lawrence (Doris) Oevering, Winona; Audrey (Jerry) Palmer, Winona; Kenny (Tweety) Oevering, Stockton; Barb (Dick) Rasmussen, Lewiston; Judie (Don) Doerr, Winona; Steve (Sue) Oevering, Stockton; and Tom (Dianne) Oevering, Stockton; 48 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Judie Oevering, Stock+≠ton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons: Wayne and Jack; four grandchildren; four sisters: Grace Wos, Eva Noceto, Bessie Milnarsek and Bernadine McElmury; and three brothers: William, Archie and Jess.
Services to remember Opal will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2012, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Winona, with Rev. Kathy Schuler officiating. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery, Stockton, Minn.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 20, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, and Friday at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m.
