Barbara Ann Steele, age 87, of Winona, passed away on December 11, 2012, at Lake Winona Manor. She was born January 16, 1925, in Portland, Oregon, to Ray and Nell (Robbins) Steele. Barbara moved to Winona in 1929 as a young child. She proudly served in the WACS as an Army nurse during World War II. Upon her return to civilian life, Barbara worked as an LPN for Dr. John Tweedy, retiring in 1958 due to poor health.
Barbara was actively involved in her church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. For many years she was involved in the altar flowers, coordinating the prayer chain and ECW. In 1961, Barbara was a charter member of the P.E.O., Chapter CS. She was a member of the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel #9 and the Legion Auxiliary, serving as a past president. In 1989, Barbara was honored as the Outstanding Woman of the Year in Human Services.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Jeanne (Steele) Neil and Margaret (Steele) Clarke. She will be deeply missed by her nieces, Karen (Neil) Eddy and Susan (Clarke) Staub; her nephews, David Clarke, Kevin Clarke, and Marc Neil; and many friends.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 10, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with visitation one hour prior. Spring interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Winona, Minn.
