Mueller, Alvin R.

(12/18/2013)

Alvin R. Mueller, age 72, of Huron, S.D., and formerly of Fountain City, Wis., passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 13, 2013, at his home in Huron.

He was born on June 29, 1941, in Elgin, Minn., to Marvin and Elizabeth (Gusa) Mueller. He attended St. Mary’s College in Winona, and then went on to earn his degree in business from Winona State University. Al honorably served his country with the United State Army during the Korean conflict.

Al worked as a manager for various retail stores in Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. He was most recently employed with the South Dakota Department of Transportation prior to his retirement.

He always enjoyed word games – especially Scrabble and working crossword puzzles. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cribbage with his buddy, Dave.

Al loved his home and living on Lake Byron near Huron, where he enjoyed the wildlife and feeding birds and squirrels. He was very active with the Lake Byron community, and served in its administration. He even had a plaque in his home that said, “If you’re lucky enough to live on a lake…then you’re lucky enough.”

Family was very important to Al, and they will miss his great sense of humor, having a good laugh, and his weekly phone calls.

Al is lovingly survived by his parents, Marvin and Elizabeth Mueller, Bluff Siding, Wis., brother: Don (Kay) Mueller, Goodview, Minn., Virginia (Dennis) Crawford, DeKalb, Ill., Nancy (Frank) Kujak, Trempealeau, Wis., niece and nephews: Steve, Rick, and Jordan Mueller; and Rebecca and Matthew Crawford, aunts: Elsie Gusa, Kellogg, Minn., Ann Lehnertz, Plainview, Minn., and his special neighbors and friends, Dave and Lynn. He was preceded in death by his brother, David.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The Reverend Glenn Frerichs will officiate.

Following the Mass, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 of Winona will provide full military honors outside of the Cathedral.

Al will be laid to rest at a later date in a family ceremony at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, on Friday, December 20, 2013, from 1 p.m. until the time of the Mass.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be considered in lieu of flowers.
