Anthony Gerald “Jerry” Heim Jr., 77, of St. Charles, died on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born on February 24, 1937, in Winona, to Anthony and Ruth (Gainey) Heim. He first attended Dublin Country School and St. Charles Public School, graduating in 1956. Jerry married Joyce (Wondrow) in Rochester on September 6, 1957, and they later divorced. He then married Darline (DeCoux) Freeman on October 17, 1992. He spent a majority of his life on the Century Farm in Elba Township prior to moving to St. Charles in 2006.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from March 1957 until his discharge in November 1962. He then farmed with his father, with his father retiring in 1979. In 1983, a barn fire took his dairy herd. He then continued with crop farming until his retirement from farming. He also worked at Hubbard Food in Altura, North Star Foods in St. Charles, as well as Lakeside Packing in Plainview. He served as Winona County Commissioner in the 3rd District for three terms, ending in 2008. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Elba, St. Charles Moose, and a former member of the Altura Lions. He enjoyed his morning coffee at the Elba House, deer hunting, Sunday drives, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Darline; six children, Carol (David) Anderson, of Lyle, Sandra (Philip) Schwantz, of Altura, Susan Thompson, of St. Charles, Stacy Heim, of St. Charles, Michael (Lori) Heim, of St. Charles, and Patrick (Wendy) Heim, of St. Charles; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, William P. (Julie) Heim, of Rochester; five step-children; and nine step-grandchildren.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Anthony G. Heim Sr.; mother, Ruth (Gainey); step-mother, Loretta (Heaser); and son-in-law, Raymond Thompson.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, December 26, 2014, at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service in St. Charles. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2014, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Elba with visitation one hour prior. Reverend Kurt Farrell will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery in Elba.
The family prefers memorials to Winona County Fair Board Association and Southeast Minnesota Resource Center in St. Charles.
