Babcock, Jessie Mae

by Sarah Squires

Jessie Mae Babcock, 86, died Monday, December 29, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in St. Charles with her family by her side.

Jessie Mae Hinkley-Lewis Babcock was born March 31, 1928, to Neil and Mathilda (Reed) Hinkley. In 1930, she along with some of her siblings, were raised by different aunts and uncles on her father’s side. Myra and Henry Lewis became her mom and dad at the age of 2 ½. Her name was changed to Lewis before entering grade school. Jessie started school in the second grade from being home taught by Myra. Piano and music were a large part of her early years, and throughout her life. She married Clifford Babcock on June 13, 1948. This was her father’s birthday and also the day Clifford passed away in June 2009, which was also their 61st wedding anniversary. Jessie did secretarial work for many businesses, owned her own dress and craft shop, and lunch service, taught piano lessons and played for many churches in the area. She was a charter member of Lewiston Ambulance, American Legion Auxiliary, and St. Charles Senior Center. She loved singing in quartets, playing cards, gathering family genealogy, and going to Twins baseball games. Jessie had a strong faith and devoted her life to the Fremont Scottish Church and Cemetery.

Jessie is survived by her four children, Roger, Gary, Ronald, and Sheryl; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Neil Hinkley of Winona; sisters, Faith Hinkley of Austin, and Etta Hoy of Florence Ky.; and brother-in-law, Gale Hill of Wabasha.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford; son, Charles; brother, Robert Hinkley of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters, Helen Bruss of Garland, Texas, Yvonne Hill of Wabasha, and Anna (Babe) Riddle of Phoenix, Ariz.

Services for Jessie will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 2, 2015, at Hoff Funeral Home in St. Charles with the Reverend Deb Bebout officiating. Jessie’s grandchildren will be her casket bearers. Visitation will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2015, and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. Jessie will be laid to rest at the Fremont Scottish Cemetery.
