Fred W. Wirsig, age 83, of Winona, died on Saturday, December 10, 2016, at his home after a brief stay with Winona Hospice. He was born on June 14, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Willi and Margarethe (Berndt) Wirsig. At the age of two the family moved back to Germany where this folks were from. At the age of 16 Fred immigrated back to the United States and lived with his aunt in Brooklyn. After finishing high school he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force and served four years, mainly in France and Germany. Following his discharge he graduated from a college in Indiana where he received a BA degree. He furthered his education at Loyola University where he attained his Master’s degree. He married Ursula Goerlich on September 14, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York.
Fred worked over 20 years for Quaker Oats in Barrington, Ill. He retired in 1996. Shortly after his retirement the couple moved to Winona. Fred was an avid reader and he loved collecting stamps. He and his wife took many trips together throughout the world.
He is survived by his wife, Ursula Wirsig, of Winona, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home in Winona with Chaplain Wendy Jaine Summers officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday one hour before the service.
