Charles A. Kubicek, age 91, of Winona, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at Lake Winona Manor.
He was born on July 22, 1925, in Owatonna, Minn., the son of Charles A. Kubicek Sr. and Mildred Pearl (Kucera) Kubicek. The family moved to Winona in 1934 and Charles attended the Winona Public Schools graduating from Winona Senior High in June 1943. On November 1, 1943, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was attached to the 4th Marine Division. While a member of the 4th Division, he saw action on Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He was discharged on December 5, 1945. Upon his discharge, he returned to Winona and for 15 years, was manager of Cortland Jewelers. From Cortland Jewelers he became a debit agent for the Prudential Insurance Company, retiring in 1987.
He enjoyed boating on the Mississippi, playing golf with friends, his Thursday afternoon card group at Westfield Golf Club, and his Friday afternoon gathering with friends at the Veterans Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan “Josie” Linken, who passed away in April 2007; his parents; his sister, Florence Goetzman; his brother, Jim Kubicek; his sister-in-law, Shirley Kubicek; his nephew, Jamie Kubicek; and niece, Jan (Goetzman) Kelly.
He is survived by his sister, Rosanne Kubicek; his nieces, Joanne Goetzman and Barbara Okland; his nephew, Walter Kelly; five great-nephews; one great-niece; and his beloved little poodle, Lovey.
Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hargesheimer will officiate.
Following the service, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors at the funeral home.
A private family burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
