David Mark Reed, 73, of Minnesota City, Minn., departed his earthly home for his eternal home on Saturday, December 17, 2016.
David was born on December 7, 1943. He was the youngest child, and fifth son, of Harold and Margaret (Thorpe) Reed. He grew up in the Winona area and attended Minnesota City, Jefferson and Winona Senior High schools, graduating in 1963. While in school, he participated in student government and lettered in football and track. He took particular pride in setting a record for the mile run that stood for many years.
In 1966, while attending Winona State College, he met Susan Kurth. They discovered many shared interests – art, history, painting, old cars and spending time in God’s beautiful out-of-doors. They were married in 1969. David taught for a number of years in the Winona schools, primarily in art at the junior high level. For three years, the Reeds lived on the west coast of Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula where David worked for the DNR. He was also a gunsmith, engraver and restorer of antique firearms.
Though not wealthy in worldly goods, Harold and Margaret Reed developed in their children the priceless value of deep family bonds. Often separated by many miles, there were frequent family gatherings. Often the brothers, spouses and sometimes extended family as well met in Big Sky country (Montana) for times of four-wheeling, shooting and gathering around campfires where stories were told and memories shared.
David was committed to his Winona Church of the Nazarene family, and enjoyed many friendships at the Winona Sportsmen’s Club.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; son, Chad (Stephanie) and their children Ethan, Anna and Elisabeth, all of Winona. David is also survived by his sister — and second mom — Jean Kalmes, of Rollingstone, Minn.; brothers, Richard (Marian) of Kila, Mont., Harold (Barbara) of Gooding, Idaho, Phillip (Nedra) of Forks, Wash.; many loved nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Raymond (Kip); sister-in-law, Charlotte Reed; and brother-in-law, Donald Kalmes.
There will be a time of visitation on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, from 4-7 p.m. at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home. His funeral service will be on Wednesday, December 28, at 2 p.m. with visitation one-hour prior at the Church of the Nazarene.
