Marian (Mullen) Whetstone, age 107, of Stockton, passed away at the home of her daughter on Monday, January 1, 2018.
Marian was born on November 19, 1910, in Winona, to Frank and Carrie (Madland) Mullen. She was the second oldest of eight children. She married Lawrence Whetstone in 1937 and they made their home in Minnesota City until moving to Stockton in 1971. They had one daughter, Darlene. She and her husband were ardent gardeners with Marian preserving the produce and making delicious jams and jellies. She loved flowers and had a large assortment of many varieties in her yard. Marian enjoyed her trips to the Springfield, Ill., area and visiting the historical Lincoln sites. She especially appreciated spending winters in Florida with her daughter and son-in-law, going to the beach shelling, shopping, and relaxing in the sunshine. She made these trips up until the age of 102. She was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Church in Minnesota City.
Marian is survived by her daughter, Darlene; son-in-law, Pete; brother, Sylvester Mullen; sister-in-law, Phyllis Mullen; and special niece, Rose Benke, who often helped with her care and kept her supplied with oatmeal cookies; and many more nieces and nephews who were all special to her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, in 1986; parents; sisters, Ellen Berry, Margaret Hogan, and Rose Hackman; and brothers, Gordon, Francis, and Bernard.
