Beloved mother, Barbara Alice Hunter (nee Bickley), 87, of Winona, died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her family. Barbara was born on September 28, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., to James and Melba Bickley. She grew up in neighboring communities including Mokena, Ill. She attended Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, Ill., enjoying various activities including participation on the girls basketball team.

After graduation from high school, Barbara followed in her sister’s footsteps, and entered the Julia F. Burnham School of Nursing in Champaign, Ill. She graduated as an R.N. in 1952.

Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Donald James Hunter, on March 15, 1952, at the First Presbyterian Church in Homewood, Ill. Donald and Barbara remained married until his death in 2010 (58 years). She was a loving mother to their four children. Don’s career as a college professor took their family from Illinois to Iowa to Pennsylvania, before settling in Minnesota. Barbara enjoyed her time spent primarily as a full-time mom, with some part-time work as a nurse. She was a devoted wife to Don, and cared for him through significant battles of health, utilizing the nursing skills of her earlier career. Barbara is remembered for her kind nature, reaching out to those in need and supporting causes that captured her heart. She was a woman of strong faith, and before health limitations was an active church member. Faith Lutheran Church was her home church in Winona.
