Delpha June Serva, age 89, of Winona, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2010, at her home.
She was born in Weaver, MN, on June 18, 1920, to George and Violet (Endres) Peterson. She was raised on a farm in rural Weaver until the age of 10 when she moved to Winona with her mother, brother and sister.
On June 9, 1938, she graduated from Winona Senior High School. In later years she attended a secretarial school sponsored by the U.S. government at Winona Vo-Tech. She held a variety of jobs including working at Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, WI, during World War II. She also worked at The Unit, Winona Public Schools, Selective Service System and at the County Solid Waste Management through the Green Thumb Program.
On June 9, 1951, she was united in marriage to Joseph G. Serva in Winona, by Judge Leo Murphy. Their only child, daughter Cynthia, was born in 1953. She was a stay-at-home mom for most of her daughter’s early years and school years.
Delpha was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Winona, the Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and a former Brownie leader. She enjoyed playing cards, camping, going to the casino, watching the Minnesota Twins, and most importantly spending time with family. She was a 25-year cancer survivor.
Delpha is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Lee) Kanz, Goodview, MN; grandsons: Jason (Amy) Kanz, Rochester, MN; Bradley (fiance Maggie Glenn) Kanz, Winona; and Erik Kanz, Goodview; two great-grandsons: Blake and Landon Kanz. She is also survived by sisters: Anna May Costello, Fridley, MN: Lousetta (Merlin) Lidtke, Minnesota City, MN; Jacqueline Hermann, Goodview and brother, Leo (Beverly) Brown, Melrose, WI; and sisters-in-law, Janice Brown, Stockton, MN; Gert Serwa, Sun Tan Valley, AZ; Janet Giardini, Glen Ellyn, IL and Anne Serva of St. Paul, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Delpha was preceded in death by her husband, parents, stepfather, Rex Brown, five brothers: Ellwood Peterson, Edward, Harold, Darwin, and Lynn Brown, sister, Audrey Waldron, and a fianc, Roy Bonow, in 1942.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with the Eagles Auxiliary service at 12:30 PM and the funeral at 1:00 PM, with Rev. Mark Dumke officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Jason, Bradley, and Erik Kanz and nephews: Michael Costello, Paul Lidtke and Dan Hermann.
