JoAnn M. Wittenberg, age 85, of Winona, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Lake Winona Manor.

She was born on March 8, 1929, in Muskegon, Mich., to Elmer and Marjorie (Bigger) Van Horn. She was united in marriage with Robert H. Wittenberg on May 14, 1949, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Alma Center, Wis. Bob preceded her in death on December 3, 2013.

Following high school, JoAnn graduated from the Winona Business College. JoAnn was employed at St. Teresa’s College, and was a legal secretary with Hull and Hull attorneys. She worked as the human resources director at Winona State University and St. Anne Extended Healthcare and was also a tax preparer for H&R Block for several years. JoAnn was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

JoAnn will be remembered for her many talents as a seamstress and doll maker, her beautiful embroidery, and the many quilts that she lovingly hand-stitched for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and baker – especially of delicious cinnamon rolls and apple pies. She was the best mother and grandmother ever, and will be deeply missed by her family.

JoAnn is lovingly survived by her children, Peggy (William) Flowers and R.J. (Donna) Wittenberg; grandchildren, Jennifer (Joseph) Williams, Stephanie (Matt) Daniels, Josh (Katie) Wittenberg and Adam Wittenberg; five great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Richard (Virginia) Van Horn, Weldon (Chris) Van Horn, Barbara Matejka, and Jackie (Vern) Markham; in-laws, Pierce (Millie) Wittenberg, Lois (Jerry) Tobin, Patricia (Gerald) Anderson, Donald (Dee) Wittenberg, Paul (Judy) Wittenberg, Shirley (Dick) Sonsalla, Carolee Peterson, Theresa Zirkle, and Maggie Wittenberg; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Wilson Van Horn and Bernard Van Horn; sister, Beverly Schammel; brothers-in-law, Richard and Edward Wittenberg; and sister-in-law, Sister Celestine OSF.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 2, 2015, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
The Reverend Chinnappa Pothireddy will officiate. 

 
JoAnn will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home on Thursday, January 1, 2015, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. There will not be any visitation held on Friday, please meet at the Cathedral for the Mass.
