LeRoy P. Steber, age 93, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2017, at Sauer Health Care.
LeRoy was born in Winona, the son of Frank and Vida (Mueller) Steber. LeRoy served in the U.S. Navy during the second World War, serving for three years in the Pacific Theater of operations on Guam and Saipan as plane captain as part of the ground crew.
After his military service, LeRoy attended the Kansas City School of Watchmaking, starting him off on a lifelong career as a watchmaker and jeweler. During this time, LeRoy was a member of the Southeastern Minnesota Watchmakers Guild where he served for a time as the organization’s chairman. He also served on the board of the State of Minnesota Board of Examiners in watchmaking. LeRoy was also a member of the American Gem Society. LeRoy was a lifelong member of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church here in Winona. He served in various capacities in the church including the ushering staff, the Board of Elders, as well as serving as leader in the Men’s Bible Breakfast for 15 years. His favorite activity in the church was attending bible class.
Among his volunteer activities, LeRoy was a member of the Winona Rotary Club for a total of 27 years where he chaired the invocation committee as well as serving on the governing board of the local club. He also served on the governing body of Sauer Memorial Home for a total of nine years.
LeRoy was an apprentice watchmaker at Warmington’s Jewelry in Winona before becoming head watchmaker at Morgan’s Jewelry. In 1974, he opened his own jewelry store, LeRoy’s Jewelry, which he ran with his wife, Marjorie, until retiring.
LeRoy is survived by his wife, Marjorie; three children, John Steber, of Plymouth, Minn., Michael Steber, of Winona, and Linda (James) Scanlon, of Minneapolis, Minn. He is also survived by brother, David Busse, of Oronoco, Minn.; sister-in-law, Delores Steber, of Winona; niece, Susan (Lee) Johnson, of Mahtomedi; nephew, Philip Steber, of West St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin brother, LeMar Steber; step-father, Arthur Busse.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2017, from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Fawcett Junker Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be on Friday, June 30, 2017, at noon with visitation one hour prior at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9.
