From: Brother William Mann
Future president of SMU
As I have expressed to our faculty, staff and students, I am deeply honored to have been selected as the 13th president of Saint Mary's University.
I have had many wonderful experiences working around the world with Christian Brothers organizations and institutions. At this point in my life and my career, it will be exciting and gratifying to shift my focus from the global educational network of the Christian Brothers to a single institution of higher education.
I look forward to living in the beautiful state of Minnesota, and to experiencing the natural and cultural delights of both Winona and the Twin Cities. (I'm not frightened by stories and photos of snowstorms. I've seen snow and ice before, and have survived!) Most of all, I look forward to meeting all of you. During my visits to Winona, I have been impressed with the talented, caring people I have met.
Winona is very fortunate to have three higher education institutions. Our students unquestionably contribute to the economy. But more than the financial benefits, these young people also share their time, their talents and their hearts with their communities. These students will go on to become tomorrow's leaders. I can think of no better location for them to become instilled with knowledge, skills and the values of compassion and generosity.
Obviously, I will have some big shoes to fill. Brother Louis DeThomasis has ably led the university for more than 20 years. He often points out that Saint Mary's is thriving because of the magnificent and dedicated faculty and staff. Nevertheless, his leadership, zeal and commitment have been key to the success and vitality of a higher education institution that serves so well its students and society.
This is an exciting time to become part of the Saint Mary's adventure. I will do my best to earn your trust and respect as we journey together over the coming years.
May the blessings of this holy season be with each of you and your families. Know that you have my best wishes and prayers for a healthy and joy-filled New Year. I look forward to seeing you in June when I begin my presidency.
